Lots of “air clearing” going on in F1

Hamilton and Alonso clear the air
Lewis Hamilton is adamant he and Fernando Alonso are “cool” after their old rivalry simmered again last week.

Alonso was incensed following the European Grand Prix in Valencia after watching Hamilton claim second, despite overtaking a safety car deployed in the wake of Mark Webber’s spectacular accident.

Hamilton was given a drive-through penalty, yet served it 17 laps after the Webber smash due to circumstances, whilst Alonso trailed home eighth.

Alonso, who had been running third in his Ferrari behind Hamilton when the safety car incident occurred, later claimed the race had been “manipulated” and the Briton had disrespected the rules.

For his part, Hamilton claimed Alonso’s comments were sour grapes as old wounds, initially inflicted from their torrid time as team -mates at McLaren in 2007, were re-opened.

To ensure, though, there was no lingering animosity between the duo heading into this weekend’s British Grand Prix, Hamilton opted to contact Alonso.

Qualifying – Vettel beats Webber to pole in Valencia

Red Bull picked up their pole position string again in Valencia on Saturday afternoon, as Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber sewed up the front row for the European Grand Prix. Going into the final runs of Q3 it was the Australian who held the advantage, but Vettel put a superb lap together to snatch the premier starting slot away, stopping the clocks in 1m 37.587s. Webber improved, but 1m 37.662s wasn’t quite enough.

Third fastest, and higher than he expected to be, was championship points leader Lewis Hamilton after a brilliant first-run lap of 1m 37.969s for McLaren. A big slide in Turn 12 spoiled his final effort. He’ll have old sparring partner Fernando Alonso for company on row two, the Spaniard taking his Ferrari round in 1m 38.075s.

Jenson Button Q&A: McLaren have the momentum

Although McLaren’s Jenson Button had to watch team mate Lewis Hamilton take his second successive win at last weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix, he left Montreal a very happy F1 driver. Not only did Button’s second-place finish place boost him up the driver standings to within three points of the lead, but he climbed on a plane safe in the knowledge the MP4-25 is finally a frontrunner. Speaking to his official website, he explains how he now needs to improve his qualifying pace to take full advantage…
Q: The team’s third one-two of the season, and a result that sees Vodafone McLaren Mercedes at the top of the drivers’ and constructors’ championships -not a bad weekend!
Jenson Button:
Yeah, it was a fantastic weekend. Firstly, it was great to be back racing in North America again, particularly in Montreal, which we’ve not visited since 2008. It’s a fantastic city and a great track.

the crowd, which is great to see.

“The race was one of the tightest so far, but the team did an incredible job
and I’m so happy and proud of the team.”

Button was happy to settle for second place and the reigning world champion

Final practice – four teams in the top four

Things settled down a little in Montreal on Saturday morning as teams found better ways to generate grip in the continuing cold conditions on the Ile Notre Dame. And McLaren got back on top courtesy of Lewis Hamilton, but Red Bull were again close and things look good for an exciting qualifying session this afternoon.

Alonso's Ferrari frustrations grow
Reports suggest that Fernando Alonso is becoming more and more disillusioned by Ferrari’s failure to compete at the front of the field.

After a fast start to the season in which Alonso won the season-opening Bahrain GP, Ferrari have tailed off of late, with the team forced to settle for eight and ninth spot in Turkey, a race that was supposed to be a celebration of their 800th race in the sport.

Reports now suggest that Alonso is becoming highly frustrated with the teams’ lack of progress.

“I’m told that Fernando Alonso is very frustrated by Ferrari’s rate of development. Compared to his time at McLaren in 2007, when the British team had updates for every race, Ferrari’s flow of new parts this season has been very slow, with no more than little tweaks here and there so far,” explained BBC commentator Jonathan Legard.

“The result is that the car that started the season right on Red Bull’s heels is now, in Alonso’s words, ‘the fifth quickest’.

Race – McLaren one-two as Red Bulls tangle in Turkey

When McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton broke his duck in 2010 he did so in dramatic style, in a Turkish Grand Prix that at one stage seemed destined to yield Red Bull yet another one-two.

Red Bull’s Mark Webber led off the line as team mate Sebastian Vettel boiled through to push slow-starting Hamilton down to third and Mercedes GP’s Michael Schumacher edged ahead of McLaren’s Jenson Button for fourth. Both McLaren drivers made up a place on that opening tour, however, and until the pit stops Hamilton put Webber under huge pressure.

Then a slight delay for the Englishman, with his right-rear tyre, dropped him to third behind Webber and Vettel, with Button a watchful fourth, and until Lap 40 that was how they ran, nose to tail, each awaiting a mistake from the others. No one else was in the race.

Hamilton wants to avoid imperfect ten
Lewis Hamilton believes McLaren will rise to the occasion and help him bring an end to his win-less drought.

Although Hamilton has stated on a few occasions this season his car is the best he has driven, he has yet to taste victory, unlike team-mate Jenson Button who has won twice.

Failure to take the chequered flag in Turkey this weekend will see the 25-year-old equal his worst run in F1 of 10 races without a win.

That was at the start of last season when Hamilton was at the wheel of a painfully-slow McLaren, only for the team to produce a stunning about-turn in performance and results.

Hamilton is convinced all the pieces will fall into place over the course of a weekend, and he will be a winner again.

“With all the different things that have happened, it has been a bit of a lottery for me,” said Hamilton.

'Alonso was asleep'
Fernando Alonso may claim he was ready to attack Lewis Hamilton on the final corner in Monaco, but Michael Schumacher firmly believes the Ferrari driver was “asleep”.

Alonso revealed after the race that he was prepared to make a move on Hamilton once the Safety Car returned to the pits on the last lap but his team forbid him.

However, according to BBC pit-lane reporter Ted Kravitz Schumacher – who was slapped with a 20-second penalty for the overtaking move – told his Mercedes team that the Spaniard was caught napping.

‘I’m reliably informed Michael was on the radio on the slowing down lap telling the team how Alonso was asleep, a phrase team principal Ross Brawn repeated later in our interview at the end of the BBC One show,’ Kravitz wrote on his BBC blog.

Despite his penalty in Monaco, Kravitz also believes Schumacher will happy that he proved he still has “that edge”.

Schumi penalised

Michael Schumacher has been hit with a 20-second penalty for his late move on Fernando Alonso in the Monaco Grand Prix.

The Mercedes driver had finished in sixth place after overtaking Alonso following the final safety car period of the race – when the safety car peeled into the pits on the final lap.

Stewards examined the incident following the race and deemed that Schumacher had broken regulations stating that drivers can’t overtake if the race ends when the safety car has been deployed – with the safety car returning to the pits and the drivers then taking the chequered flag in the order they were running.

The penalty drops Schumacher to twelfth place in the race and hands the final point to Sebastien Buemi.

Mercedes had argued that the safety car had been withdrawn and that Schumacher was right to make a move for position as a result.
